In a recent ‘Question of the Week’ post in the Dia&Co National Facebook Group, we asked, “Who are your favorite style icons?” Overwhelmingly, we heard about your admiration for classic Hollywood style icons like Audrey Hepburn and Grace Kelly. Why? Because they perfectly nailed classic style with silhouettes and memorable pieces that are timelessly chic—regardless of today’s trends. To help you get the look, our Fashion Director Rosaliz Jimenez compiled a list of the eleven items that were just as in style in the 1950s as they are today.

1. The Trench

Remember the iconic final scene of Breakfast at Tiffany’s where Holly GoLightly is outside in the pouring rain wearing a tan trench coat? Not only are trench coats very practical for rainy days and transitional seasons, but they also go with just about anything. From a brightly printed dress to an all-black ensemble, a tan trench coat is a closet staple for every classic girl.

2. The LBD

A little black dress belongs in every woman’s wardrobe, and it’s not difficult to see why—it never goes out of style and is a great canvas for showcasing accessories and layering pieces. It’s also great to play up with accessories that have a bit more color or items that really make a statement. Find an LBD that fits you perfectly and makes you feel incredible because it’s perfect to wear to just about any occasion!

3. Black & White Striped Top

Black and white is a tried-and-true color combination that will never go out of style the way black and white film has! This bold contrast of colors pops when layered under jackets and it looks especially pretty when paired with bold red lipstick. Horizontal stripes are not just for thin Hollywood starlets, they’re perfect for all shapes and sizes and can be styled to work with your look whether you have preppyglamclassic, or traditional style.

4. Dark Wash Straight Leg Jeans

While skinny jeans are ubiquitous right now, denim silhouettes are always changing with the trends. Flared jeans come in and out of style, wide-leg jeans have a moment every so often, but straight leg jeans are always a good idea. Give it a try with a striped tee and a red lip and you’ll be ready for anything.

5. Red Lipstick

Everyone looks good with red lipstick—yes, everyone! Find the shade of red that best complements your complexion and keep it handy. A simple outfit gets a bold pop when topped off with a red lip. It worked well for Grace Kelly and Audrey Hepburn, and it will work well for you, too.

I could wear a red lip every day for the rest of my life and always be in style.

6. Black Mascara

No matter your hair color or your outfit, black mascara will give you an air of polish and pretty. While Twiggy-style big lashes are not always all the rage, we can still take inspiration from her 60’s glamour.

7. Sheer Pink Nail Polish

Not only does sheer pink polish go well with any outfit, it also goes well with any skin tone. Although it’s subtle, nails finish your outfit so that your look is totally polished to perfection.

8. Diamond Studs

As far as fine jewelry goes, diamond studs are certainly worth the investment. Not only do they go with absolutely everything in your wardrobe, but they also are undeniably timeless. Hoops go in and out of style and have small variations that make them current, but diamond studs are always in. If a pair of real diamonds aren’t in your budget, then go for a pair made of cubic zirconia. We won’t tell!

9. Tortoiseshell Sunglasses

There are countless images of Audrey Hepburn with her tortoiseshell cat eye sunglasses. While her driving gloves and hair scarf might be stuck in the past, her sunglasses continue to be in style today. For those days when you have to run errands but don’t have time to complete your makeup, sunglasses are the perfect low-effort way to look classically glamorous.

10. Neutral Loafers

A great pair of loafers was just as chic in the 50s as it is today. Loafers are also extremely versatile as they’re perfect for wearing to the office or to a party but don’t cause discomfort in the way that heels can. Find a pair that works for your personality, be it backless mules, penny loafers or an embellished pair with tassels.

11. Structured Leopard Print Bag

Did you know leopard print is a neutral? Because the print contains black, brown and tan, it truly does go with just about anything. A structured bag gives a casual outfit an extra touch of polish, and when it features a fun print, it can truly transform a simple look.
