Once you discover your absolute favorite pair of jeans, the fear of over-wearing them can quickly set in. Thankfully, there are a few steps you can take to lengthen the life of denim. Here are the 4 things you can start doing—or stop doing—to keep your favorite pair in great condition for as long as possible, according to the experts behind Dia&Co denim.

1. Don’t overwash!

Your favorite pair of jeans doesn’t need to be washed every time you wear them. In fact, overwashing them will cause the color of the wash to fade more quickly. If something gets on your jeans in between washes, try spot-cleaning instead with a damp cloth and some mild soap.

2. Turn your jeans inside out when washing them.

When you do wash your jeans, make sure to turn them inside out to prevent fading. Items tend to bump up against each other as they go through the wash cycle, which can end up causing the colors to fade. Turning jeans inside out reduces that risk and prevents the color from spreading to other garments. Keep the wash load exclusively denim so that when colors do spread, it’s all the same hue.

3. Always wash on the cold cycle.

Washing denim on the cold cycle prevents shrinkage and protects against color fading. Plus, cold-water cycles are better for the environment!

4. Hang your denim when drying.

Putting your jeans in the dryer can damage the fabric’s fibers—airdry them instead to prolong the life of your denim. While your jeans may feel a little crunchy to the touch after airdrying, the fabric should soften after about an hour of wear.
