Native New Yorker and Dia Community Manager Lauren Brake loves to balance practicality with creative expression through her everyday outfits. Because her fast-paced metropolitan lifestyle requires her outfits withstand long walks, subway stairs, a day in the office, and happy hour, versatility is the name of the game.
I started at Dia&Co four years ago as a stylist looking for a creative outlet and the opportunity to help women feel empowered through style. Throughout my journey here, being closer to the customer and elevating their voices has been extremely important to me. I’m currently the Community Manager and focus on our closed community spaces as well as working cross-functionally with other teams to ensure the Community’s feedback and needs are understood across the org.
Being a native New Yorker has impacted my style immensely because it’s not just a form of expression but serves as my armor and must be functional. While my style changes with my mood (it can be classic, boho, edgy, casual, or glam on any given day), it must be practical. I’m also pressed for closet space so I make it a point to ensure that every item in my wardrobe can be worn multiple of ways throughout the year. My golden shopping rule is, if I can’t wear it at least 3 ways, it doesn’t belong in my closet. Using this method, I only purchase what I absolutely love and I rarely repeat an outfit!
If you walked into a style kitchen, the recipe for my style on any given day could be a mix of Michelle Obama (classic and sometimes casual), Stevie Nicks (boho glam), and Solange (eclectic and bold). Add salt or pepper to taste. Here are some of my latest favorites to hit the Dia inventory.
1. Eden Long Sleeve Rounded Hem V-Neck Sweater
No matter what time of year, I always keep a mustard yellow sweater handy! This one is great for layering over darker pieces to add some much needed illumination to my fall looks. I wore it over a rainbow striped lurex dress to create a fun daytime glam look that’s perfect for both work and happy hour. By tying a knot on the side, I was able to make it playful while emphasizing my waist.
2. Claire Rainbow Lurex Dress
I love the boldness of a printed dress, especially one that also has a little bling. This lurex dress is so much fun that I wouldn’t want to just wear it at night. To make it daytime ready, I would also wear it over a fitted black turtleneck or layered beneath a long cardigan. I’m a huge fan of making everything in my wardrobe super versatile, so I wore it here under a sweater to create the illusion of it being a skirt. Suddenly this one item has transformed into two!
3. Kerry Denim Jacket
I love that this denim jacket is lightweight enough to wear on its own or under a heavier coat once winter hits. It also has the perfect amount of stretch, allowing me to layer with ease without feeling restricted in the arms. To help me create an edgier look, I wore it over a button-down shirt to balance the boldness of my colored jeans. I would also wear it over that rainbow dress at night for a fun party look. Again…versatility is key!
4. Reese Roll Up Sleeve Button Up Top
This shirt has a worn-in look with rhinestone buttons which allows me to create a daytime glam-grunge vibe that I’m totally into, because sometimes button up shirts can sometimes be too serious. For an evening out, I would tie it up in the front and rock it with fishnets and a leather skirt for an edgier feel.
5. Leroy Ankle Skinny Jeans
Do you own a pair of these jeans yet? Seriously, the comfiest skinnies you’ll ever slide into! I have a pair in dark denim already but the deep red adds a boldness to my denim collection that I love. I made sure to wear a dark top in order to let the pants take center stage. I’m also really into my new snake print booties so I cuffed the bottom to show them off.
6. Oceanway Sleeveless Halter Dress
No matter what time of year it is, I just cannot turn down a good floral maxi dress. This one is so elegant in the summer but once fall hits, it’s perfect for wearing over a fitted long sleeve tee. To make it funky, like me, I gathered the side of the dress and tied a knot so that I could show a little leg. By adding my signature beret and combat boots, I was able to create an edgy boho look that’s perfectly moi.
